BALD AND BEAUTIFUL A Journey of Healing Through Music

Beautiful, you are beautiful
You’re beautiful just as you are
Beautiful, you are beautiful
Show the world who you are
Shine your light, you are a star.”

Those are lines from the chorus of singer/songwriter Abby Asistio’s self-penned single titled Beautiful. The beauty of the story behind those words, the journey it took for those lyrics to be written, and the woman behind the song will take your breath away.

Abby has lived with alopecia, an auto-immune condition that results in partial or total hair loss, practically all her life. Since being diagnosed at the age of four, she had to contend with wearing hats, bandanas or wigs constantly and endure the vicious teasing and rejection from her peers. In a society where set norms and standards of physical beauty, including having long, luscious locks, are given a high premium, Abby believed she could never be beautiful.

“I was ashamed not to have hair. I tried to project an image that I couldn’t care less about this disease when I was actually filled with doubts, fears, and insecurities inside,” Abby writes in her eponymous blog. Abby continues to reveal the embarrassment and ugliness she feels when people accidentally see her baldness. “It made me ugly…and it had to be kept hidden,” Abby writes.

Abby found spiritual renewal in early 2000 and slowly began to come to terms with her condition. Her faith helped her to go beyond her outward appearance and focus on who she was inside – her character, talent and grace. “…regardless of how I looked like, or however incomplete I saw myself, I was beautiful and complete in His eyes,” Abby shares in her post.

After much searching and praying, Abby finally decided to embrace her condition and go completely bald. She debuted her new look during an alopecia awareness concert in September 2012 and dedicated the song Beautiful to those who are living with alopecia. “Beautiful is like a love letter to my younger self. It was a song that once sang to my soul and am now singing to you,” Abby notes.

Today, Abby is the poster child for alopecia awareness in the country. She continues to inspire and empower countless others who are living with alopecia through story and music. And as a brand ambassador of Novuhair, nature’s answer to hair loss, she is a testament that the battle with alopecia may be won.
