What makes hair naturally curly, straight, or even just wavy may be determined by genetics. In an article on the website www.popsci.com, it cites a study conducted in 2009 that ascribes between 85% to 95% percent of hair texture to DNA. The curly hair gene is an autosomal dominant trait so it almost always wins over the genes for straight hair. But sometimes, a combination of inherited curly-haired and straight-haired genes may result in wavy hair.

But there are other factors in play as well. One of the most widely accepted theories is the shape of the follicles as a determinant of hair texture. myth or factFollicles are minute, tube-like cavities in the skin where hair grows. Round hair follicles give way to hair that grows straight while flattened ones lead to thinner hair strands that are prone to curling. On the other hand, wavy hair are grown out of oval-shaped hair follicles.

Another reason why hair may be curly or straight is determined by arrangement or structure of proteins, called
keratin, that make up each hair strand. This protein molecule contains sulfur atoms that sometimes bond with each other. When this happens, it is called a disulfide bond. Simply put, the more disulfide bonds there are, the curlier the hair becomes.

A new year always brings renewed hope, fresh beginnings and a chance to start anew. Better start writing down your goals and plans for the new year now. Here are a five quick and easy tips to boost your confidence and make things happen.

1. Sit up straight, stand tall.
Studies suggest that people with good posture exhibit a more confident attitude compared to those who are fond of slouching; they tend to have more belief in their thoughts and actions. Sitting up straight and standing tall is also a surefire way to look more attractive and that is always a confidence booster.

2. Practice good hygiene and proper grooming at all times.
This may seem very obvious but some people tend to underestimate the importance of these. Knowing you look and smell clean and good does wonders for your mood and self-image. It gives you an instant dose of confidence even around different people and situations. So always take a shower, spritz on some nice perfume, shave, get a regular haircut, and keep your nails neatly groomed. Switch to hair-friendly products. Check the labels on your shampoo, conditioner and other styling products for ingredients that may cause more damage to your hair. Some products contain chemicals that strip off natural oils, causing the weakening and thinning of hair strands over time. Look for products like Novuhair made with natural ingredients that protect and promote healthy hair.

3. Dress nicely and appropriately.
Choose clothes that are of good quality and flattering to your body. Always wear clean, presentable clothes and learn how to dress according to the occasion. A good wardrobe need not be expensive, just have flexible key pieces you can either dress up or down. Dressing nicely and appropriately always adds to your confidence and feelings of success, and helps command respect and credibility, especially in the workplace.

4. Think positively.
Make a conscious effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Practice positive affirmations daily instead of stressing over what you think you can’t do. Channel your mind into a positive direction always and you’ll notice your entire perspective shifting from pessimism to optimism. Make positive thinking a habit and you’ll surely feel better about yourself and the world.

5. Smile.
Smiling is the quickest and easiest way to feel good about yourself. It instantly changes your mood and lifts the spirits. It also means you are self-assured and people will react positively to that, which in turn will give you a confidence fix.

CELEBRITY HAIR ALERT: Famous Men Who Are Going Bald

Most men, even though they claim not to care about their looks, are generally more concerned about one thing – their hair. Or the lack of it. Or the danger of losing it. Blame it on genetics maybe, but many men just cannot escape hair loss as they grow older. Even the handsome, popular, talented and wealthy guys on this planet are not exempt from hair woes like the average Joe. Hair might just be the great equalizer among men after all.

Prince William. No title or crown can save the heir to England’s throne from going bald as a result of male pattern baldness. Nevertheless, his real-life princess and legions of his admirers all over the world still adore him, hair or no hair

Jude Law. The A-lister and theater actor simply brushes off digs at his progressing hair loss. Now in his 40s, Law, who was once named by People magazine as the Sexiest Man Alive, still remains as one of the hottest men in Hollywood even with his receding hair line.

Mark Ruffalo. An acclaimed and Oscar-nominated actor/screenwriter, Ruffalo is also starting to show hair line recession and hair thinning. But he is nonplussed as he reprises the role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the sequel to the box-office hit, Marvel’s The Avengers.

Jason Statham. A man’s man through and through. A global box-office star, thanks to his action-packed movies, Statham is a fine example of someone who has embraced hair loss. With his signature short, cropped hair style, Statham is proof that hair loss is not an obstacle to being attractive and sexy.

Nowadays, a multitude of hair treatments are easily available and accessible to women who want to change their natural hair styles or keep up with evolving trends in hair fashion. But do you know what really happens to your hair every time you have it bleached, dyed or permed? Instead of making your hair curlier, straighter, softer or more colorful, the chemicals used might have more lasting and harmful damage than you’ve imagined.

Perming is a century-old process of using chemicals or applying intense heat to the hair to make it curly or straight. Bleaching often involves the use of hydrogen peroxide to lighten the color of the hair while some hair coloring products use chemicals that cause allergic reactions and irritation to the scalp.

Some of the ill effects perming, bleaching or dyeing may have on your hair are the following:

• Hair Breakage
The strength of the chemicals used in the treatments causes changes in the hair’s protein texture, stripping moisture from the hair and making it dry, brittle and porous. This makes the hair strands more prone to snapping and breakage, also referred to as a “chemical haircut.”

• Scalp Damage
When bleaching, perming or hair coloring agents come into contact with the scalp, it may cause adverse reactions such as redness, irritation, itching, skin discoloration, peeling, burning or development of sores. Extreme chemical burns may even lead to hair loss. Stop the treatment right away if any kind of discomfort is felt.

• Inhibits Hair Regrowth
Regular use of chemical-based hair treatments may cause irreparable effects to the hair follicles, preventing new hair growth to replace the cracked and damaged hair strands.

So, before you get your hair straightened, permed or colored, make sure to choose a reputable salon and discuss with your stylist the overall health of your hair. Keep in mind that a head of healthy locks is more important than sporting the season’s latest hair style.

WHAT HAIR CAN DO: Creative Uses for Human Hair

Have you ever wondered what salons and barbershops do with all the hair that falls on their floor daily?  Well, aside from sweeping it off to the trash or donating it to make wigs, hair is also sold and bought for other unconventional purposes.  Below are a few examples of the creative, albeit sometimes peculiar, uses of human hair and items made out of it.

1.Make a diamond. Yes, you read it right. A company called Heart in Diamond specializes in highly unique and personalized synthetic diamonds made from carbon extracted from a lock of hair or the ashes of your loved one. Its website markets these lab-made diamonds as ideal gifts fit for any special occasion such as anniversaries or the arrival of a new baby.

2. Eco-friendly eyeglasses. Designed by graduates of the Royal College of Art-London, these sustainably fashionable eyewear, aptly called Hair Glasses, make use of human hair with bioresin as a binding agent.

3.Create jewelry. Kerry Howley, a contemporary British jewelry designer, designed a collection of jewelry, particularly neck pieces, made of human hair.

4.Hair gowns and dresses. Designed by Thelma Madine of UK’s Big Fat Gypsy Weddings TV show, the gown pictured below is made out of a total of 820 feet of hair. Another designer/artist, Charlie Le Mindu, whose celebrity clients include Lady Gaga, also works with human hair as the main material for his fashion pieces.

5.For home and structural improvement. In some rural areas in Asia and Europe, human hair is mixed with clay and other binding agents for plastering walls. A study on the various uses of human hair claims that human hair provides extra reinforcement and “significantly reduces cracking.”

Aloe vera is widely known in the Philippines as a natural herbal remedy for treating burns, cuts and wounds, and promoting thick and shiny hair. Commonly grown as a house plant, the aloe vera’s leaves contain a rich gel-like substance, which is usually applied directly to the skin or scalp.

girls-524239_960_720The aloe vera (scientific name: Aloe Barbadensis) is the most popular among the family of aloe plants and originated from North Africa. It figured prominently in traditional folk medicine and was also believed to be used by the Native Americans and those in the Caribbean to treat scalp infections and promote hair growth.

The aloe vera gel has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties that relieve scalp itching and irritation, and remove dandruff and flaking. It stimulates hair growth by keeping hair pores clean, allowing new hair strands to push through the pores, and nourishing the hair follicles for stronger and longer hair strands. Aloe vera also has a moisturizing property that keeps hair strands from becoming brittle and falling off easily.

And now, the hair growing properties of aloe vera are now in a bottle – in Novuhair, nature’s answer to hair loss. As one of its active ingredients, Novuhair brings you the wonders of aloe vera to your daily hair care regimen.

Answer: FACT.  Worrying about all those hair in the drainage every time you shower? Or those little clumps left behind after brushing? No need to panic.  Falling hair is normal even if it happens everyday. Hair shedding occurs on a daily basis at an average of 50 to 100 hair strands, even going up to 150 strands in some women.  Normal hair shedding happens when old hair fall out so new hair may grow in its place. But if you notice large clumps of hair regularly coming out, visit your doctor right away just to make sure it’s nothing beyond normal.

Heads up! Gary V on Novuhair: putting energy into prevention

GARY-90-x-140-mm-ColoredNothing describes Gary Valenciano quite like his moniker “Mr. Pure Energy,” He is the very image of youthful vibrance, whether onstage or not. That’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he values the way he looks the same way that he values the core of who he is: a prayerful, faithful husband, dependable father, and an outstanding entertainer.

Part of what makes Gary stay young looking is his head of hair. What many people don’t know is that, like all other men his age, Gary once worried about hair thinning and hair loss. That’s why, at the first signs of the problem, Gary sought to find ways to prevent it from becoming worse.

“I first noticed the hair loss in the shower, after I toweled my hair dry. Then one day, my team of hairstylists noticed that my hair was thinning, too. That’s when they told me to look for the product that Fanny Serrano was using, a product called NOVUHAIR,” remarked Gary on his journey to regaining control over his hair loss.

NOVUHAIR is a topical scalp lotion that is a unique combination of 14 different natural ingredients and essential oils for a healthier hair and scalp. One of the factors of hair loss, according to studies, is stress, something that Gary experiences on almost a daily basis. Other factors include hereditary disorders, a persistent illness, major surgery, hormonal problems, childbirth & delivery, medications, infections, pollutants, and even excessive exposure to sunlight. And contrary to popular belief, hair loss is as much a problem for women as it is for men. In many cases, hair loss may be prevented or alleviated through early detection. In the case of Gary, his decision to try NOVUHAIR to prevent his symptoms from worsening made a big difference, and within a few months, he saw remarkable results.

Gary shares his experience with NOVUHAIR as he tells the story of their family hair history: “Hair loss runs in our family, too, even if it sometimes skips a generation. My brother and grandfather both lost their hair, but my dad still has a full head of hair at 87. I just wanted to make sure I take control of my symptoms. Now, I use NOVUHAIR everyday, and I’ve noticed that I don’t shed as much hair as I did before, especially after toweling my hair dry. And my hairstylists noticed it, too. I love using NOVUHAIR because it has this minty, cool effect that makes me feel like my hair is always clean and fresh.”

“In less than a month and half, I already saw results even if I was told to wait three to four months before I can see a difference. The effects on me were much faster. There were fewer strands on my white towel, which basically was within the normal boundaries of hair loss for an average person. Before using NOVUHAIR, I used to shed more.” This is due to the fact that NOVUHAIR penetrates deep to help rejuvenate, nourish, & maintain moisture in the scalp and hair. By improving the blood circulation in the scalp, NOVUHAIR helps stimulate hair growth and aid in preventing further, excessive hair fall, while also improving the overall appearance of the hair.

“I never endorse a product that I did not experience first. I have to make sure it is really effective. With Novuhair, I can say that it has really contributed to my peace of mind and overall well-being. And, heads up, as Novuhair is now part of my daily routine, which includes prayer, diet, and medication. God has truly lived up to his promise in my life, and as he says in Psalm 92:14 ‘I will keep you fruitful even in old age. Fresh and green.’ I am very happy now that Novuhair is a part of that.”
