MY JOURNEY BACK TO HEALTHY HAIR: Abby Asistio’s Recovery from Alopecia

Singer-songwriter, TV host, and the poster girl for alopecia in the country, Abby Asistio is singing a happy tune nowadays. And it’s all because of those precious new strands of hair growing on her previously bald head.

Diagnosed with alopecia areata since the age of four, an autoimmune condition characterized by the loss of hair due to damaged hair follicles, Abby had to contend and overcome various physical, emotional and psychological obstacles. Having exhausted almost all possible treatments to no avail, Abby finally came to terms with her condition and even rose above it.

With much grace and courage, she went public with her condition in 2012 and shaved her head. Her message was loud and clear: It’s perfectly fine to be bald and beautiful. Her message was received with loud cheers of praise and her life has never been the same since that fateful day.

Today, Abby proudly shows off her head with its short hair, like a child showing off a prized toy. “It has consistently been growing longer these past two years. My hair is significantly thicker now and I could already style it in different ways, even without having to wear wigs, turbans, and other hair accessories,” she shares with an obvious gleam of joy in her eyes.

Although it might seem like a miracle or a scientific breakthrough, Abby quickly reveals her secret: Novuhair, nature’s answer to hair loss.

After her public outing in 2012, Novuhair reached out to Abby and offered her their product. She had already heard about it from Fanny Serrano, a family friend and the brand’s endorser, but she was wary of trying another product just to get disappointed all over again.

She eventually relented and started using Novuhair in March 2013. After six months, Abby was pleasantly surprised to notice fine strands of baby hair growing in previously bald areas. “It was very exciting! It encouraged me to be more persistent in using it,” Abby recalls.

Since that day, Abby has been a loyal Novuhair user and swears by it. “I use the scalp lotion, shampoo, and conditioner religiously,” Abby continues.

It seems like a miracle, those delicate black strands of hair growing from her scalp and for Abby, the sensations are almost all new to her. “I never thought I could have a full head of hair again. I could actually “take care of my hair” now and even go to the salon to get a trim,” she says enthusiastically. “I love having hair again,” she further states.

Having alopecia is a huge part of Abby’s life journey and after successfully recovering from it, she has made it her mission to help others afflicted with the same condition. She started by putting up the first support group in the country – Alopecia Philippines, which aims to spread awareness about the condition and at the same time, inspire and motivate those with alopecia to become more secure and comfortable in their own skin.

As of now, the group’s online Alopecia Philippines Facebook group counts around 300 members from all over the country. There are those who are afflicted with alopecia themselves and some are their family members or loved ones. “People share stories there, share experiences, post inquiries as well as words of encouragement to help those in the group,” Abby states.

The group has already lined up a number of activities and campaigns for the year, especially during Alopecia Awareness Month come September, including a planned Alopecia Weekend Boot Camp and awareness concert. They also hope to formalize the organization before the year ends to do more for those with alopecia in the country.

“It’s never easy,” Abby says about living with alopecia. “But remember, you are not alone. People around you love and care for you, and accept and appreciate you for who you are. Look for someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, people to laugh about your journey and hair stories with,” Abby further shares.

“Everything happens for a reason. In the end, we can choose to rise above the disease and come out better, stronger, more courageous, and more beautiful. Our hair may come and go but it is who we are, what is inside that truly matters and lasts,” Abby says with a smile, the beautiful woman who has bravely battled alopecia and came out of it gloriously victorious.

Abby Asistio helps raise awareness on Alopecia Areata

Activa MediaSince she was four years old, singer, songwriter and TV host Abby Asistio has been suffering from alopecia areata, an auto-immune skin disease resulting in partial or complete loss of hair on the scalp and the rest of the body.

“I went through a lot of tough periods in my life. Growing up, I accepted the fact that I could never meet that standards set by the world when it comes to beauty. If I were to even fit in and be considered normal, I must resort to hiding under hats, bandanas and my ever reliable wigs,” said Abby.

Abby lived through the entire process of experiencing hair fall: losing it little by little, and then deciding to shave it all completely. She even tried other hair loss remedies when she lived in the US for several years, including chemical-based products that have resulted in negative side effects.

She was just starting to finally embrace her “baldness”, when upon prodding from family and friends, Abby decided to give Novuhair a try. She experienced remarkable results in just a few months of regular use.

“It was the first time since I was diagnosed with the disease that I actually saw hair growing on my scalp. I never stopped using Novuhair since,” remarked Abby.

Novuhair is made of herbal ingredients that rejuvenate and nourish the hair and scalp. It increases nutrient flow and maintains its moisture, as well as helps improve blood circulation. This stimulates hair growth and aids in the prevention of excessive hair fall.

In addition to remedying hair loss, Novuhair also alleviates scalp itching and prevents hair-graying, ultimately improving the overall health and appearance of the scalp and hair.

Late last year, Abby became the newest brand ambassador of Novuhair alongside TV host Kim Atienza. Past endorsers include hairdresser Fanny Serrano, beauty queen Gwendolyn Ruais and athlete Andrew Wolff.

“We at Novuhair are very happy to welcome Abby to our growing family. We are very happy for her as she triumphs over alopecia areata. Her testimonial is more than enough proof of our product’s efficacy,” says Sheila Mae Velilla, President of Nutramedica Inc.

One of the country’s top dermatologists have also affirmed the new growth of hair in Abby’s scalp, citing this as largely a potential result of the product’s effectiveness.

Speaking on behalf of other patients suffering from the disease, Abby is at the forefront of a national awareness campaign on alopecia areata. A couple of years ago, she started an Instagram campaign in which she invited friends and family to pose with a double “A” (inverted V) sign using their fingers. The response was overwhelming as it received more than a thousand photos to date.

Things are looking bright for Abby as she recently launched her album “Beautiful”.

“I have found my purpose and hope I can continue to inspire others with my story and music. I realize now that more than a disease, I have been given a gift to impart my testimony. Indeed, one must never give up hope.” said Abby.

 Spotlight on Alopecia Areata

More than just common hair loss

“A disease with unknown causes is very difficult to treat. This is the case with alopecia areata,” said Dr. Rica Mallari of the Philippine Dermatological Society.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder where the immune cells of the body go against the hair follicles making the hair strands weak at the base and easy to pluck. It is characterized by bald patches on the scalp that may join together and eventually render an individual hairless. Alopecia areata and may also attack other hairy parts of the body such as the eyebrows and pubic area.

Alopecia has many types, among them are pattern hair loss or common baldness; telogen effluvium or temporary hair shedding; and alopecia areata which is considered the hardest to treat.

“The disease has a genetic predilection, meaning there are more chances of getting it if there is a family member affected. It is however, not infectious as no organisms are involved. Though inconclusive, extreme stress is said to trigger the condition in genetically susceptible individuals,” added Mallari.

Alopecia areata is generally asymptomatic – the patient is often unaware of his bald patches because there are no symptoms of pain or itching. Although some complain of a tingling sensation before a patch appears.

Alopecia can affect both men and women at any age. Its onset cannot be prevented and there are no studies to prove that healthy lifestyle can help cure the disease.

“There are a number of treatments and products for different types of alopecia depending on the case. It is important that the affected individual seeks help from an expert, preferably from a dermatologist of the Philippine Dermatological Society so that the condition can be evaluated and proper advice can be given,” said Mallari.

Among the products available in the market today is Novuhair. Dubbed as nature’s answer to hair loss, Novuhair is made from all-natural ingredients, including moringa oleifera, panax ginseng, virgin coconut oil, as well as the essential oils of rosemary, peppermint and lavender. Collectively these ingredients help improve blood circulation and increase nutrient flow to the scalp.

Moringa oleifera or malunggay is one ingredient that helps restore the skin’s condition and prevent falling hair. Sweet almond oil, another ingredient, is a moisture-rich oil that contains vitamins A, B1, B6 and E, as well as minerals such as magnesium and iron. Scientifically known as prunus amygdalus, sweet almond oil easily penetrates the hair shaft and follicles, relieving hair dryness and itching and providing nourishment to the hair to promote hair growth.

Lavender helps relieve itching, and like rosemary, another ingredient, it contains properties that help combat dandruff and disinfects the scalp. Lemongrass helps clean the scalp’s pores, while peppermint is known to slow the growth of bacteria and fungi, aside from having a relaxing effect on the muscles.

Novuhair users already notice a decrease in hair loss after only just one week. Hair growth becomes evident with regular use of the product. Once desired results are achieved, Novuhair may still be used as hair and scalp maintenance.

In response to growing demand from its users both here and abroad, Novuhair is now available in a special 2-in-1 Plus One pack, a combo inclusive of Novuhair Shampoo, Topical Scalp Lotion, plus an additional bottle of Novuhair Shampoo.

Just recently, Novuhair introduced two of its latest endorsers – TV host Kim Atienza and singer-songwriter Abby Asistio.

Atienza, fondly referred to as ‘Kuya Kim’, is an advocate of true health and wellness. He believes in the use of all-natural ingredients and Novuhair is as natural as a hair remedy could get.

Meanwhile, Abby Asistio knows how it is like to live without hair. She has suffered from alopecia areata at a very young age, and until recently, has lived bald under wigs, hats and bandanas. Today, with the help of Novuhair, the entertainer is experiencing hair growth on her scalp for the first time in years.

Abby Asistio – Alopecia Warrior, Singer/Composer – Philippines

Activa Media
I’m one of the new breed of young artists to join Manila Genesis Entertainment & Management Inc. I’ve recently released my debut, self-penned single titled “Beautiful” which was arranged by Jay Durias of South Border. The single’s music video is directed by Joaquin Valdes and is currently enjoying massive airplay on Myx as well as on Manila’s hottest radio stations.

As early as the age of four, I knew what it was like to be without hair. Diagnosed with alopecia areata, a condition that causes patches of hair loss around the body, I have lived through the entire process of experiencing hair fall: losing it little by little, and then deciding to shave it all completely last year. I even tried other hair loss remedies as I lived in the US for several years, including chemical-based products that have resulted in negative side effects.

One day, I’ve decided there was no more hiding. In September 2012, I took a stand and embraced my baldness. Together with my good friend Jing Monis, I’ve shaved my head and began with an Alopecia Areata Awareness Month Instagram campaign in which I’ve invited friends and family to pose with a double “A” sign using their fingers. The campaign grew to success and to date has over a thousand photos. On September 25 of the same year, I did a coming out concert where I performed bald in public for the very first time.

Last year I was highlighted as one of the top 41 best vocalists on The Voice Of The Philippines as one of its chosen contestants out of thousands of aspirants. Also a finalist of the Dove Real Beauty Campaign and one of Meg magazine’s 30 Young Achievers, I’ve made it one of my life goals to be a voice for those with alopecia areata. I am honored to be chosen as brand ambassador to Novuhair. This new platform will help me to continue my advocacy to share my music and life story.

Abby Asistio Before and After

Since using Novuhair, I’ve experienced remarkable results. Visible signs of hair growth appeared within five months of use – and this is after years of baldness caused by alopecia areata. The strands of my hair are thicker and more healthy-looking. My scalp is clearly nourished and invigorated. When it comes to hair growth, nature is on my side with Novuhair.

Hair Loss, The Second Encounter: Three Common Types

You’ve had consistent hair fall, you’re losing hair in patches – are you going to go completely bald? When? How? Why? It’s easy to dismiss these symptoms as the precursor to the possible ‘doomsday’ of your hair, and many label it simply as alopecia.

True though, the word alopecia stands for hair loss. However, alopecia manifests itself in different ways, and knowing which type of hair loss you have is one big step towards understanding how to manage or treat it.

Here are the three most common types of alopecia or hair loss:

Alopecia Areata1. Alopecia Areata – This has to be one of the most popular hair loss types. It manifests with hair loss in patches. Most of the time, the patches are rounded, and are about an inch in size when it’s just starting. It is believed to be an auto-immune disease where the immune system regards the hair follicles as ‘foreign’, and in turn attacks them, disabling them from to producing hair.

A variety of cream treatments like Dithranol and Cortocosteroids have surfaced, but those with natural active ingredients like Novuhair 3-in-1 pack (Topical Scalp Lotion, Herbal Shampoo and Herbal Conditioner) can also help serve as a safe and effective alternative.

Androgenetic Alopecia2. Androgenetic Alopecia – More commonly known as male pattern baldness (or female pattern baldness), this kind of alopecia is so named because it’s a genetically predisposed condition. Men who are affected by this usually experience the onset of hair loss as early as their teen years, while the thinning in women’s hair is experienced at around their 40’s. It normally manifests with a receding hairline.

There are chemical-based treatments for this kind of alopecia and products with active natural ingredients like Novuhair 3-in-1 pack which aids in the treatment of this hair loss type.

Telogen Effluvium3. Telogen Effluvium –  Though not commonly heard of, this form of hair loss is actually something anyone can easily encounter at a certain point in their life. It occurs when an individual goes through a considerably extreme amount of stress, affecting one’s hormones and in turn the hair growth cycle, causing increased hair fall. This usually happens after child birth, in some cases when taking dieting drug, and causes also include severe emotional stress.

Treatment begins with resolving the stress trigger. Products like Novuhair 3-in-1 can also help in ‘re-activating’ the hair follicles, and promoting the smooth flow of the growth cycle.

Think your hair loss falls into one of these three most common types of alopecia? Don’t lose hope, safe and effective means that aid in alleviating hair loss are available in the Philippine market.
