THE CAUSES OF DANDRUFF AND HOW TO TREAT IT

Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by the appearance of flaky skin and itchiness of the scalp. Other symptoms may include irritation and redness of the scalp. Although not a serious problem, having dandruff could potentially be a very embarrassing one.

Causes of Dandruff
Unlike what many think, dandruff is not a result of poor hygiene. Although there are no definite known causes of dandruff, a yeast-like fungus that is present in everyone’s scalp, malasezzia, is believed to be a major contributing factor when it grows out of control. As a result, it feeds on the oil secreted by the scalp, irritating it and producing more skin cells. These extra skin cells take on a white and flaky appearance, die and fall off.

Not shampooing properly and often enough is also a probable cause of dandruff. If excessive shampooing strips the hair of its natural oils, not enough shampooing, on the other hand, causes the buildup of more oil and dead skin cells on the scalp, giving the yeast and fungi a feeding frenzy.

Extreme and excessive flaking on the scalp may also be a result of other underlying fungal and inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis.

Dandruff may also be a reaction to certain ingredients found in hair care products like shampoos, dyes, and styling gels or wax. These sensitivities could result in an itchy and scaly scalp.

Treatment Options
Although having dandruff does not pose a risk to your health, some people who have a severe case of dandruff may experience some social or confidence issues that’s why it’s always better to treat it right away.

For most cases, medicated and specially-formulated shampoos, which are conveniently and easily available in groceries and drug stores, usually address the problem. Check the label if it contains zinc, which is used to fight against dandruff.

Other shampoos, like Novuhair, nature’s answer to hair loss, also has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties, which are helpful in managing and treating dandruff. Novuhair is made from the best herbal and natural ingredients combined together to promote healthier, thicker, more manageable, and stronger hair. It contains essential oils of peppermint, lavender, rosemary, and lemongrass, moringa, aloe vera, and virgin coconut oil, which are all proven to alleviate scalp itching, redness, and irritation, and reduce the appearance of dandruff.

Regular use of an anti-dandruff shampoo should solve the problem for mild cases. But in severe conditions, it is best to see a dermatologist to address the root cause of the problem and get appropriate treatment.
